WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) — The Democratic Party was rocked Monday by the revelation that N.Y. Gov. Eliot Spitzer had hired a prostitute.
Media reports suggested he would resign, but he made no comment about resignation one way or the other in a brief statement to the press. Spitzer apologized to his family and the public but answered no questions. He said he would have another statement shortly.
Sptizer’s involvment with the prostitution ring was first reported by the New York Times. The Times reported that Spitzer was identified as “Client No. 9″ in a federal investigation into the Emperor’s Club VIP, the subject of a federal indictment of four people last week.
The Times said Spitzer had been caught on a federal wiretap arranging to meet a prostitute at a Washington hotel last month. The government recorded more than 5,000 phone calls and intercepted 6,000 emails after getting a warrant to wiretap the ring, court documents said.
Spitzer had been one of the party’s up-and-comers when he was elected in a landslide in 2006 after eight years as a corruption-fighting state attorney general. His popularity has eroded steadily since his election, however.
Spitzer had endorsed Sen. Hillary Clinton, his home-state senator, in her run for the presidency.
If he resigns, Spitzer would be succeeded by Lt. Gov. David Paterson, also a Democrat. Paterson is the first African-American lieutenant governor in the state. Paterson has also endorsed Clinton.
